Pims scores it big; GTO makes waves

    SUCCESS is the word to describe best the just-concluded Philippine International Motor Show (Pims). Cheers to the PIMS officers led by Rommel Gutierrez, the president of the organizing Campi (Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc.).
    It was a success because almost every major player in the automotive industry cooperated.
    Had there been just one missing link in the event, it might have meant a major blow, one kink that could have jeopardized the integrity of the whole affair.
    We all know that in unity, there is strength; that in strength, achievement becomes a given.
    It is worth noting that every Pims participant had endeavored to present its best, to unveil new ideas and practically boasts of models that are meant to outwit, if not overshadow, the opposition.
    As Michinobu “The Rocker” Sugata, the president of Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP), said during the Pims opening: “Today we have shown you a glimpse of Toyota’s new direction. Ladies and gentlemen, this is only the beginning. We at Toyota are proud to bring you even more exciting vehicles in the future.”
    In joining the fourth edition of the country’s biggest automotive show, the TMP played it really big, allotting a huge 380-sq-m area for its distinguished array of cars.
    The lineup included the new 86 TRD, all-new Camry, Innova and Fortuner TRD, not to mention that the TMP also launched the 86 Aero variant and the limited-edition Vios TRD.
    In “unearthing a legend” in the 86 Aero Variant, Sugata-san said Toyota’s goal was to create a unique rear-wheel-drive sports car that is fun to drive.
    “The 86 Aero features an aggressive front, side and rear skirts matched with a high-mount rear spoiler,” went the 86’s spin. “Red trimmings on the steering wheel, shift knob, door handles and a bucket seat adds a sportier flavor to the vehicle.”
    No doubt the 86 is a comeback hit. Because of that, my dear friend, Vicente “Wency” A. Wenceslao, craves for one. Unfortunately, like many other car buffs in the country, Wency couldn’t find one.

    Vios Limited Edition
    VIOS, the locally manufactured wonder, also had a show of its own at the Pims as TMP unfurled the TRD Limited Edition model.
    Vios being the country’s No. 1 selling car, the new Vios TRD attracted ride enthusiasts with its 17” TRD alloy wheels, rear spoiler, muffler cutter and side skirts that came as standard features.
    What gave the show’s visitors added thrill was the chance for each one of them to test-drive not only the Toyota Prius Hybrid and the all-new Camry from TMP, but also practically all the models of the other exhibitors, to include Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Honda, Subaru, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and the many others that lent a helping hand to make the event a success.
    The show had for its theme, “Fun to Drive.”
    But Toyota went a little farther by adopting as its theme the pitch, “Drive the Fun,” during the four-day event.
    And, of course, not far behind in giving added punch and thrill to the Pims was TMP’s Big Brother, Lexus Manila, which brandished its own unique brand of entertainment by unleashing the lethal duo of Martin Nievera and Gary Valenciano. Unique because Lexus man Danny “Sir John” Isla, being a certified Beatlemaniac, saw the need this time to divert from Beatlemania to “Ballad­mania” if only to be attuned to the times.
    That only proves how diverse and dynamic a man Sir John is.

    GTO doing wonders
    IF you use the GTO (Green Technology Oil) to treat your engine oil, you will never change engine oil again for the entire lifetime of your vehicle.
    “Our GTO has two objectives,” said Elso Cabangon, the much-respected president of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (1969-70), who is one of GTO’s major distributors in the country. “It controls carbon emission from land, sea and air transport vehicles, and it reduces the maintenance costs of your vehicle, because you no longer have to change engine oil and oil filter once you start using GTO. Plus, your engine will work more efficiently upon treatment of our GTO.”
    In one emission test last week in Marikina, a passenger jeepney registered 5.26 emission exhaust before the GTO treatment was done and the vehicle’s smoke was virtually all black. After mixing 250 ml of GTO with the engine oil, the reading dropped dramatically to 1.19. Gone was the black smoke.
    “The latest good news we got was, our GTO has just passed the rigorous tests from the Department of Science and Technology-Environmental Technology Verification (DOST-ETV),” Cabangon said.
    Banker top gun Senen Glorioso, successful businessman Bob Corrales, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas deputy governor Diwa Guinigundo and BusinessMirror Opinion Page columnist Jonathan de la Cruz have attested to the effectiveness of the GTO as they have become loyal users of it.

But the main event will be at the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) compound at the Elliptical Road, Quezon City, on August 30 and 31. PCA Administrator Euclides “Ukli” G.     Soot Could Slow Down Global Warming

    NASA claims that the government could slow down worldwide global warming by cutting down on soot emissions. Studies by NASA show that cutting down on soot would not only have an immediate cooling effect, but would also put a stop to many of the deaths caused by air pollution. When soot is formed, it typically travels through the air absorbing and releasing solar radiation which in turn begins to warm the atmosphere. Cutting soot emissions would be an immediate help against global warming, as the soot would quickly fall out of the atmosphere and begin to cool it down.

    Cutting back on soot emissions would buy us time in our fight against global warming. Soot is caused by the partial burning of fossil fuels, wood and vegetation. Soot is known to contain over forty different cancer causing chemicals, and a complete cut would offer untold health benefits worldwide.


    What's The Biggest Contributor To Climate Changes?

    Environmental conservation has always been a topic for lengthy discussions, but up until recent times, global warming and climate changes were vague subjects, with no hard proof. Not surprisingly, the previous lack of attention to these issues have created a very gloomy outlook on our future. So, considering all this, what could be the biggest contributor to climate changes through global warming? Transportation - the man-made iron horses, flying machines and sea monsters, so to speak.

    The question we have now is how green is our transportation? The majority of the worlds' vehicles are fueled by oil (petrol, diesel and kerosene). Even if they rely on electricity, the stations used to generate this electricity use fossil fuels for power! Excluding vehicle manufacture, transportation is responsible for 14% of the artificially created greenhouse emissions, mostly carbondioxide.

    Automobiles, trains and planes are all responsible for this problem, but cars are the highest impact-makers. They release approximately six times more carbondioxide than a plane and seven times more than sea vessels.

    What is Air Pollution?

    Air pollution is somewhat difficult to define because many air pollutants, at low concentrations, are essential nutrients for the sustainable development of ecosystems. So, air pollution could be defined as:A state of the atmosphere, which leads to the exposure of human beings and/or ecosystems to such high levels or loads of specific compounds or mixtures thereof, that damage is caused. With very few exceptions, all compounds that are considered air pollutants have both natural as well as human-made origins.

    Air pollution is not a new phenomenon; in Medieval times, the burning of coal was forbidden in London while Parliament was in session. Air pollution problems have dramatically increased in intensity as well as scale due to the increase in emissions since the Industrial Revolution.
