Gasoline-burning cars produce more black carbon than suspected, according to a new study

Tiny particles known as black carbon can pack a heavy punch when it comes to climate change, by trapping heat in the atmosphere and by alighting atop, and melting, Arctic ice. With an eye toward controlling these emissions, researchers have tracked black carbon production from fossil fuel combustion in gasoline-burning cars and diesel-burning trucks. Once thought to be minor players, gasoline-burning engines could put out twice as much black carbon as was previously measured, according to new field methods (Environ. Sci. Technol., DOI: 10.1021/es2033845).

Black carbon particles, which come from many combustion processes, have become a focus this month of an international agreement to control climate impacts from short-lived but powerful actors such as methane, hydrofluorocarbons, and black carbon (C&EN, Feb. 20, page 8). The new findings could lead to controls on gas-burning vehicles, long considered to produce less black carbon than diesel-burning trucks and cars.

A team of Canadian government scientists stumbled upon the hidden black carbon emissions after deploying a new laser-based method to monitor soot and other tiny particles in the chaos of traffic. In 2010, John Liggio and his colleagues fromEnvironment Canada and the National Research Council Canada deployed the new device along highways around Toronto.

The instrument’s pulsed laser beam heats black carbon particles up to thousands of degrees Celsius, making them light up like “red-hot glowing charcoal,” says project leader Jeffrey Brook. A photometer measures the brightness of the particles to estimate their mass in real time. The team compared their device to a commonly used single-particle analyzer, known as SP2, which they set out at the same time.

The researchers followed 30 heavy-duty, diesel-burning vehicles and collected samples of their exhaust. They found that the trucks belched out levels of black carbon similar to those documented by prior studies.

While the scientists were chasing trucks, stationary monitors measured particles moving downwind of the same multi-lane highways. Video monitoring helped the team track the number and types of vehicles passing by. After measuring the mass of black carbon as it fluctuated over 17 days, the scientists compared those data with estimates of total black carbon based on expected black carbon emissions of diesel- and gasoline-burning vehicles. But their estimates always fell short of the actual black carbon measurements.

Gasoline-burning vehicles would have to emit more to take up the slack, the researchers concluded. They calculated that such vehicles must emit about 75 mg of black carbon per kilogram of fuel, about twice the amount that other scientists have reported and that the SP2 measured. They surmised that, unlike the new device, other methods miss tiny black carbon particles as small as 7 nm.

Researchers should be aware of the limitations of SP2, an instrument that is growing in popularity despite its lower sensitivity, says Dan Lack of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. However, other monitoring techniques such as absorption filters can track smaller particles, he says. For now, the discovery of a hidden well of black carbon holds true only for the team’s Toronto sites, he points out.

Mark Jacobson of Stanford University comments that if the results hold true elsewhere, they “imply an even greater urgency for taking measures to reduce particle emissions from vehicles.”

California sets tough new clean car standards

The U.S. state that takes climate change most seriously—California—has unanimously approved new rules dubbed the Advanced Clean Cars program to lower carbon emissions, reduce oil dependence, mitigate health impacts from pollution, and save consumers money in the long-term. According to the new standards, by 2025 cars sold in California must cut greenhouse gas emissions by 34 percent and smog emissions by 75 percent. The program will also require 15.4 percent of all cars sold in California to be zero or near-zero emissions by 2025.

"[The Advanced Clean Cars Program will] cut dangerous air pollution, create new jobs and drive investments in the fast-growing clean energy economy," said Erica Morehouse, an analyst with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), in a press release. "Because this program will be done in parallel with national standards, all Americans will reap the many environmental, health and economic benefits this program offers."

Several large automakers—Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, and Nissan—also supported the new rules. While some have opposed the regulations because they would drive up the price for a new car, the board said higher costs would easily be made up by the new vehicles consuming less fuel and other benefits.

"Our research shows a $1,400 to $1,900 car price increase. But over the life of the vehicles, the owners save $6,000 in reduced fuel and maintenance costs," board spokesman David Clegern said as reported by the AP. The regulations, which took 3 years to develop, are expected to cut oil consumption by 2.2 million barrels a day by 2025.

California, whose regulations are often tougher than the federal government's, has long been in the driver's seat on U.S. emissions and smog regulations with ten states to date adopting California's smog rules as their own.

Apparently, the movement to make the world aware of this danger ahead is already a huge success. It is also a fact that the world is so busy finding a single answer in the halls of convention centers manipulated by agents of big corporations... ever looking for a way to rail the conclusions into something that serves only their best interest in the guise of something green. The clock has been ticking since... The real picture isn't really all that nice. As a matter of fact... it is very much alarming.

While everyone waste the time in reaching agreements for the ever elusive answer to global warming... Let me invite everyone to think and ponder on this. "Why not focus in things you have full control of?" If everyone will focus on things they can control... then we can solve climate change much easier. If 70% of GHG comes from land transportation... that means... We as a consumer motoring public can control or CUT about 70% maximum of the total GHG. If we can do that, then we can control the climate! - makes sense? Why go so far? We can't stop the Ice from melting... but We can stop the global temperature from rising any further by simply cutting on our Emissions by at least 90%! While everyone has been busy looking for answers... we have been making near ZERO Emissions a reality on a daily basis... ONE CAR AT A TIME!...

This is the real and active solution. So far... the Kyoto Protocol and the Durban Meetings are only passive approaches... lip services... and no real actions in reversing the effects of the Greenhouse Effect. Before we forget the real problem to begin with. God willing... the rest of the world will soon find out and adopt the solution+action that I and the rest of my small group have taken. Silently, we are saving the planet - and we don't need the bells and whistles of tri-media for our rewards. The smile on the faces and the taking away of the realized guilt from each vehicle owner that our solution-technique is the reward in itself already. Local government officials, citizens’ groups and NGOs in four Philippine cities should thank the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Philippines and BPI Foundation for undertaking research and publishing “Business Risk Assessment and the Management of Climate Change Impact.” It is subtitled “Vulnerability Assessment of Four Philippine Cities.”
The four cities are Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Iloilo. The words “risk” and “vulnerability” should turn the elected local officials of these cities into boy scouts and girl scouts (if they are not already) and make them swear by the motto “Be Prepared.” They should hit the ground running as early as now. But first, they should have the information.
Lazy local executives elsewhere who have seen the aftermath of Tropical Storm “Sendong” should be pressured to do some physical and mental aerobics by the riverbanks, lakeshores and mountain tops. Reading the WWF-BPI study is also a good start. The reading-challenged could practice some humility and seek explanations from the experts who are more than willing to share what they know, help them gather data and assess their vulnerability.
The WWF-BPI study begins with a national overview. It then takes on “an in-depth, city-specific view” and presents the methodology that was used, the scope of the assessment, analyses, scenario-building, adaptive capacity and integration and assessment. The study takes note of each city’s “socio-economic sensitivity”—its population, housing, source of income, educational facilities, businesses, water supply and even crime solution efficiency. It attempts “to look 30 years into the future” and encourages “out-of-the-box” thinking.
Here are excerpts from the WWF-BPI assessments per city. (You can ask for a soft copy of the study by sending an e-mail to kkp@wwf.org.ph.)
At barely 57 sq. km, Baguio City is the smallest and most densely populated city covered by this study. In the scoring process, it also emerged as the most vulnerable to climate change impacts. All historical records confirm that Baguio City has the highest rainfall in the country, and climate trends indicate that this is likely to get worse. From a climate point of view, the management of urbanization trends and watersheds as well as Baguio’s population growth will play roles in defining the continued viability of this city’s economy.
Baguio does not have a commercial air link. Its only economic umbilical cord is confined to land access. Surprisingly, its current top development drivers are real estate development, agricultural production and educational enrolment, all of which depend greatly on new land, appropriate infrastructure and reliable land access via well-maintained mountain roads. Currently none of these appear to measure up to Baguio’s future needs. Level of vulnerability: 7.43; climatic/environmental exposure: 9.17 (scale of 1 to 10—with 10 being the most vulnerable)
Cebu City’s opportunity lies in a long-term plan and development model that will disperse and diffuse climate risk. One scenario flagged “united political leadership” as a key element, along with “effective, efficient, responsible and transparent governance.” Cebu will require new investments in “climate smart” infrastructure and technology. It will also require a re-thinking of what it will take to build human capital, improve the well-being of Cebu’s work force, and keep that at the cutting edge. If Cebu City looks “beyond its fences” and forges new development directions leading to global integration in this climate-defined future, it may seize this opportunity to strengthen its economic supply chains within the region, and maintain its reputation as a center for cost-competitiveness and reliability as a processor or supplier of goods and services. Level of vulnerability: 6.65; climatic/environmental exposure: 7.79
It is likely that Davao City will have to deal with climate impacts such as sea level rise, increased sea surface temperatures, ocean acidification and inter-annual variability of rainfall. It is also likely that Davao will emerge as a site of refuge of an increased number of migrants. There are indications that this trend has already begun. High population growth and in-migration underscore that strategic development decisions must be made now. More than that, a multi-stakeholder formula for continuity must be set in place if this city is to sustain and re-engineer its agricultural strengths, and avoid the disorganized congestion that characterizes many other cities, emerging as a new center for livability and competitiveness in a climate-defined world. Level of vulnerability: 5.68; climatic/environmental exposure: 6.63
Iloilo City has the second highest population density of the four cities in this study. Sitting on reclaimed marshland, it also remains highly flood-prone. In combination, these two factors constitute a serious risk. Next to Baguio, Iloilo emerged as the second most vulnerable city in this study.
If this city is to achieve sustainability and maintain its competitiveness in a climate-defined future, it is clear that a sustained effort to better manage land use, infrastructure, land/sea access as well as flooding is put in place through a mix of natural and engineered initiatives. There is no doubt that well-managed drainage systems, as well as flood-free highways, will remain key elements in the drive toward sustainable economic growth. Level of vulnerability: 6.69; climatic/environmental exposure: 8.18

GTO Tours the USA

Our OTG Guy Jacques Robert has so much Fire in his eyes and belly to fulfill his adventure of a lifetime! He could've picked a better time and car if he would... but this is something else!

He went to America for a different business, but he ended up deciding to cross the American continent from coast to coast. He saw a 1986 Honda CRX just rotting away in a relatives garage and he decided to buy it right away for only $1.00.

What could be the best way to prove GTO than on an old car? After cleaning the spark plugs and replacing the battery, He added 2 GTO (250 ml.) in the old engine oil, yes, he didn't change the oil inside.

Primed the carburetor, ran the engine and had it registered; installed KML's and a Vorxin and Off he went touring America after 2 days.

He started 1st of December and finished at the 14th.

14 days on the road, crossing 19 states.

He started from Las Vegas, Nevada and crossed through Phoenix, Arizona, New Mexico, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Orleans, Alabama all these states lower south all the way up to South Carolina, North Carolina to Washington and New Jersey.

The car ran great all the way even with occasional over heated engine since the radiator fans' thermostat switch was not working. Robert had to make a jumper connection with a switch to manually turn on the radiator fans as needed. That's why plenty of photo's shows the hood is popped open to cool the engine during stop overs.

In this video, He featured The windmill generators in Arizona, Area 51 and some Chemtrails along the way. There was only one video made all the rest where still photos since he needed to conserve memory space and battery life in the camera so it could last 2 weeks on the road.

The car only had a tire problem, but enginewise - it ran like new.

Average fuel mileage was about 40MPG.

Still runs great, now it is used by his sister.

After 5,120.9 Miles since GTO treatment... the old oil turned Golden Shiny Brown!... and its quality hasn't turned toxic, so he re used it again in the engine.

Robert has a vast experience in automotives and lubricants as well and has tried all types of oil, but after using GTO last year, he felt there is something different about this oil, he used it on all his vehicles and was very much satisfied with what it can do, it was his confidence to GTO's potential that made him decide to push for this Solo Adventure tour of a Lifetime across the USA.

How big is a nanometer?

A nanometer (nm) is 1,000 times smaller than a micrometer. It is equal to 1/1,000,000,000th or one-billionth of a meter. When things are this small, you can't see them with your eyes, or a light microscope. Objects this small require a special tool called a scanning probe microscope. ( Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) is a branch of microscopy that forms images of surfaces using a physical probe that scans the specimen. An image of the surface is obtained by mechanically moving the probe in a raster scan of the specimen, line by line, and recording the probe-surface interaction as a function of position. SPM was founded with the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope in 1981.

Many scanning probe microscopes can image several interactions simultaneously. The manner of using these interactions to obtain an image is generally called a mode. The resolution varies somewhat from technique to technique, but some probe techniques reach a rather impressive atomic resolution. They owe this largely to the ability of piezoelectric actuators to execute motions with a precision and accuracy at the atomic level or better on electronic command. One could rightly call this family of techniques "piezoelectric techniques". The other common denominator is that the data are typically obtained as a two-dimensional grid of data points, visualized in false color as a computer image. )

All these things are on the nanometer scale: Virus (30-50 nm), DNA (2.5 nm), buckyballs (~1 nm in diameter), CNT (~1 nm in diameter).

[Nowadays - Nano Technology is so abused and mis-used as a marketing tool Buzzword. We did use the same line but not as to advertise or promote the GTP. We are confident to use this unit of scale since Liquid Science is in fact much smaller in size when we talk about it's true molecular forms. How can we measure liquid in it's broken down size?... We can't. We can only measure the ppm of it's broken down hydrocarbons and other light to heavy metals in it if it does have them. In it's virgin form, it has Anti-viral properties... If it does, this only means it has molecules much smaller than a virus since it is able to penetrate into the viral structure - How about that?! - No wonder, that a drop of GTO could disperse a heavily contaminated black oil stain on your oil filler cap. - Makes perfect sense doesn't it?]

To put this into context, a single molecule of animal fat would give the same TAN reading as a single molecule of hydrochloric acid, even though hydrochloric acid is by far the most corrosive of the two. Indeed, the acid present within a synthetic turbo oil is about the same strength as household vinegar!

TAN Oil analysis is crucial to maintaining the mechanical integrity of equipment and to prevent internal damage to components. An oil's TAN will increase with the passage of time or if exposed to high running temperatures - the oil becomes oxidised (high temperatures cause oil molecules react with the oxygen within the air). Oxidation severely affects an oil's ability to protect internal components and can also affect the viscosity.

In synthetic turbo oils, hydrolysis (a chemical reaction involving water) can also cause an increase in the TAN, especially when the oil is subject to heat.

The TAN is defined as the weight (in milligrams) of a standard base (e.g. potassium hydroxide, KOH) that's required to neutralise all of the acidic components within the oil. Its unit is mg KOHg-1 (milligrams of KOH per gram).

An initial decrease in TAN is no cause for concern - some of the lighter acid compounds present within the oil when it was manufactured will evaporate away which will in turn reduce the TAN.

TBN oil analysis

Oils are continually exposed to acidic compounds which cause the oil to turn more acidic. This is particularly true of crankcase oils. In an attempt to combat this problem, manufacturers give the oil a 'reserve alkalinity' which is designed to 'cancel out' any acidity which forms in the oil during use. The TBN determines how effective the battle will be against any acids formed during the combustion process. A higher TBN means the oil has more reserve alkalinity available which can be used to reduce the corrosive effects of acids.

A low TBN can also reduce the detergency of an oil and can therefore lead to fouling within the crankcase.

As a general rule of thumb, if the TBN is measured at 2.0mg KOH g-1 or less, or if it's 50% of the virgin oil TBN, the oil is considered unfit for engine protection and there is a risk that corrosion could take place. The use of a high sulphur fuel will decrease the TBN at a faster rate due to the increased formation of sulphuric acid.

"My car is a 4-year old refurbished Korean Pajero or Hyundai Galloper. After registering over 150,000 kms, I felt the engine showed wear and tear. It lost its pulling power and it became inefficient @ 9-10kms a liter of diesel from as high as 15 to16 km a liter running @ 70kph (km an hour), initially. I decided to replace the engine and I already bought one last August 2011. But before my mechanic could be around, I was introduced to GTO in a meeting in Surigao City last September 2011. Since I am an avid advocate for clean and green environment, and since those introducing the products are my friends, I did not have second thoughts about the product. I loaded two 250ml GTO and a bottle of the blue one (GTF). Driving home that evening, I felt the change right away: a) lighter push to the accelerator, b) much lower temperature - less than half of what the gauge used to register, and c) reduced smoke. The following week I did an 800-km trip down South. Comparing my fuel consumption with my previous trips, I noticed that I added 3 to 4 more kms a liter now with GTO, and my engine's temperature stayed at minimum level. And I haven't changed oil since September. GTO has restored my car's fuel efficiency. And I am no longer thinking about replacing the engine."

With 4 Liters of Caltex HD Diesel Oil plus one 250ml. bottle of GTO, an old Hilander Isuzu SUV was driven non stop for 8 hours more or less, inclusive of 5 stopovers sleeping in the vehicle without switching the engine off... and over 303 Kilometers of driving from Laguna to Baguio City.

The fuel diesel consumption was only 26 Liters!

Average speed in NLEX and SCTEX was about 110kph;

Average speed uphills all the way to Baguio was 60kph... top speed was 70kph and the lowest was 40kph during the final stretch.

Passing brand new Stradas and Much better condition Revos was like a piece of cake... and we didn't felt like the Isuzu needs a pushing... Driving confidence was very much high!

There is still visible smoke from the tail pipe... colored white, but it dissipates immediately... and it's not that offensive... we will test the emissions on the way back to Manila.

The tyre pressure wasn't checked so we have no idea what PSI it is.

After crunching the numbers... we estimated that the cost of the trip per kilometer is only P4.00!

The same law has three systems and one of which is the power of the people to transmit a petition on "Referendum on local law which refers to a petition to approve or reject a law, resolution or ordinance enacted by regional assemblies and local legislative bodies."

Section 4 of the law states that "The power of initiative and referendum may be exercised by all registered voters of the country, autonomous regions, provinces, cities, municipalities and barangays."

In the case of Davao City, in order to reject the ordinance reclassifying a parcel of land in Binugao, the vote in favor for it must reach at least 10% of the total number of registered voters and each legislative district of Davao City must be represented by 3% of its registered voters.

Commission on Elections records as of March 17, 200 shows Davao City has a voting population of 797,214. Ten percent of that will be 79,721.

Considering there will be more voters registered as we speak, 80,000 or more signatures will be more than enough to Save Davao.

To save you the time and effort and also to prevent too much unnecessary bother to the owner with so much calls and inquiry, we are taking the liberty to update everyone about the subject vehicle in this video.

Recently, about 3 weeks ago more or less as this post is updated (01/21/12), This vehicle ran out of oil due to a physical leak at the oil pan gasket.

It is general knowledge that no engine can withstand to run for so much kilometers without oil lubrication.

In other words... the engine was ran for so much kilometers without oil due to the leak.

The bearings were replaced and it was top overhauled that costed roughly about P13,800.00 in both Labor and Materials.

The lesson learned: Do check the levels of your oil regularly especially if your engines or vehicles are as old as the one shown in this video.

GTO is not mean to cure everything... it is merely a preventive maintenance solution. It cannot cure physical gasket defects or damages... but it can recondition old gaskets but are not yet cooked/ overheated nor cracked.

A normal untreated engine will freeze or stuck up without GTO protection, which could mean - that the owner would have to replace the whole engine or its cylinder block.

Since this engine was treated with GTO, it did not freeze up, but continued to ran until it has reached the threshold limits of the connecting rod bearings which is susceptible to oil starvation.

The connecting rod bearings are always moving in a circular pattern which can throw out oil lubricants easily, and it is only when there is oil present that can be pumped into the oil capillaries... that these bearings are protected.

This only proved that GTO protected the engine from much further and bigger damage.

A used diesel engine like this would cost more than P50K.

If one tries to do a google search, it will be difficult to find honest to goodness review on LPG fueled Taxis.

It is certain to find only biased materials about this fuel infrastructure. So we conducted a more honest investigation from the man on the street.

In this study, we have used the Toyota Vios 1.3 Taxi as our Baseline Reference... and compared it with the Hyundai Diesel Accent Taxi alternative, Another Toyota Vios with LPG as the traditional alternative and with the GTP (Green Tech Program) Toyota Vios "ALTERNATIVE OPTION".

Based on realistic figures, we came up with a calculator sheet and try to put in all the salient items needed by the entrepreneur in order to come up with a more realistic picture.... as shown below.

In this chart, other attributes were not shown and compared... the main focus here is only the economic issues. The GTP is also understated in this presentation, for example, the information on downtime hours were also not shown.

The world is likely to build so many fossil-fuelled power stations, energy-guzzling factories and inefficient buildings in the next five years that it will become impossible to hold global warming to safe levels, and the last chance of combating dangerous climate change will be "lost for ever", according to the most thorough analysis yet of world energy infrastructure.Anything built from now on that produces carbon will do so for decades, and this "lock-in" effect will be the single factor most likely to produce irreversible climate change, the world's foremost authority on energy economics has found. If this is not rapidly changed within the next five years, the results are likely to be disastrous."The door is closing," Fatih Birol, chief economist at the International Energy Agency, said. "I am very worried – if we don't change direction now on how we use energy, we will end up beyond what scientists tell us is the minimum [for safety]. The door will be closed forever."If the world is to stay below 2C of warming, which scientists regard as the limit of safety, then emissions must be held to no more than 450 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; the level is currently around 390ppm. But the world's existing infrastructure is already producing 80% of that "carbon budget", according to the IEA's analysis, published on Wednesday. This gives an ever-narrowing gap in which to reform the global economy on to a low-carbon footing.If current trends continue, and we go on building high-carbon energy generation, then by 2015 at least 90% of the available "carbon budget" will be swallowed up by our energy and industrial infrastructure. By 2017, there will be no room for manoeuvre at all – the whole of the carbon budget will be spoken for, according to the IEA's calculations.Birol's warning comes at a crucial moment in international negotiations on climate change, as governments gear up for the next fortnight of talks in Durban, South Africa, from late November. "If we do not have an international agreement, whose effect is put in place by 2017, then the door to [holding temperatures to 2C of warming] will be closed forever," said Birol.But world governments are preparing to postpone a speedy conclusion to the negotiations again. Originally, the aim was to agree a successor to the 1997 Kyoto protocol, the only binding international agreement on emissions, after its current provisions expire in 2012. But after years of setbacks, an increasing number of countries – including the UK, Japan and Russia – now favour postponing the talks for several years.Both Russia and Japan have spoken in recent weeks of aiming for an agreement in 2018 or 2020, and the UK has supported this move. Greg Barker, the UK's climate change minister, told a meeting: "We need China, the US especially, the rest of the Basic countries [Brazil, South Africa, India and China] to agree. If we can get this by 2015 we could have an agreement ready to click in by 2020." Birol said this would clearly be too late. "I think it's very important to have a sense of urgency – our analysis shows [what happens] if you do not change investment patterns, which can only happen as a result of an international agreement."Nor is this a problem of the developing world, as some commentators have sought to frame it. In the UK, Europe and the US, there are multiple plans for new fossil-fuelled power stations that would contribute significantly to global emissions over the coming decades.The Guardian revealed in May an IEA analysis that found emissions had risen by a record amount in 2010, despite the worst recession for 80 years. Last year, a record 30.6 gigatonnes (Gt) of carbon dioxide poured into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, a rise of 1.6Gt on the previous year. At the time, Birol told the Guardian that constraining global warming to moderate levels would be "only a nice utopia" unless drastic action was taken.The new research adds to that finding, by showing in detail how current choices on building new energy and industrial infrastructure are likely to commit the world to much higher emissions for the next few decades, blowing apart hopes of containing the problem to manageable levels. The IEA's data is regarded as the gold standard in emissions and energy, and is widely regarded as one of the most conservative in outlook – making the warning all the more stark. The central problem is that most industrial infrastructure currently in existence – the fossil-fuelled power stations, the emissions-spewing factories, the inefficient transport and buildings – is already contributing to the high level of emissions, and will do so for decades. Carbon dioxide, once released, stays in the atmosphere and continues to have a warming effect for about a century, and industrial infrastructure is built to have a useful life of several decades.Yet, despite intensifying warnings from scientists over the past two decades, the new infrastructure even now being built is constructed along the same lines as the old, which means that there is a "lock-in" effect – high-carbon infrastructure built today or in the next five years will contribute as much to the stock of emissions in the atmosphere as previous generations.The "lock-in" effect is the single most important factor increasing the danger of runaway climate change, according to the IEA in its annual World Energy Outlook, published on Wednesday.Climate scientists estimate that global warming of 2C above pre-industrial levels marks the limit of safety, beyond which climate change becomes catastrophic and irreversible. Though such estimates are necessarily imprecise, warming of as little as 1.5C could cause dangerous rises in sea levels and a higher risk of extreme weather – the limit of 2C is now inscribed in international accords, including the partial agreement signed at Copenhagen in 2009, by which the biggest developed and developing countries for the first time agreed to curb their greenhouse gas output.Another factor likely to increase emissions is the decision by some governments to abandon nuclear energy, following the Fukushima disaster. "The shift away from nuclear worsens the situation," said Birol. If countries turn away from nuclear energy, the result could be an increase in emissions equivalent to the current emissions of Germany and France combined. Much more investment in renewable energy will be required to make up the gap, but how that would come about is unclear at present.Birol also warned that China – the world's biggest emitter – would have to take on a much greater role in combating climate change. For years, Chinese officials have argued that the country's emissions per capita were much lower than those of developed countries, it was not required to take such stringent action on emissions. But the IEA's analysis found that within about four years, China's per capita emissions were likely to exceed those of the EU.In addition, by 2035 at the latest, China's cumulative emissions since 1900 are likely to exceed those of the EU, which will further weaken Beijing's argument that developed countries should take on more of the burden of emissions reduction as they carry more of the responsibility for past emissions.In a recent interview with the Guardian recently, China's top climate change official, Xie Zhenhua, called on developing countries to take a greater part in the talks, while insisting that developed countries must sign up to a continuation of the Kyoto protocol – something only the European Union is willing to do. His words were greeted cautiously by other participants in the talks.Continuing its gloomy outlook, the IEA report said: "There are few signs that the urgently needed change in direction in global energy trends is under way. Although the recovery in the world economy since 2009 has been uneven, and future economic prospects remain uncertain, global primary energy demand rebounded by a remarkable 5% in 2010, pushing CO2 emissions to a new high. Subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption of fossil fuels jumped to over $400bn (£250.7bn)."Meanwhile, an "unacceptably high" number of people – about 1.3bn – still lack access to electricity. If people are to be lifted out of poverty, this must be solved – but providing people with renewable forms of energy generation is still expensive.Charlie Kronick of Greenpeace said: "The decisions being made by politicians today risk passing a monumental carbon debt to the next generation, one for which they will pay a very heavy price. What's seriously lacking is a global plan and the political leverage to enact it. Governments have a chance to begin to turn this around when they meet in Durban later this month for the next round of global climate talks."One close observer of the climate talks said the $400bn subsidies devoted to fossil fuels, uncovered by the IEA, were "staggering", and the way in which these subsidies distort the market presented a massive problem in encouraging the move to renewables. He added that Birol's comments, though urgent and timely, were unlikely to galvanise China and the US – the world's two biggest emittters – into action on the international stage."The US can't move (owing to Republican opposition) and there's no upside for China domestically in doing so. At least China is moving up the learning curve with its deployment of renewables, but it's doing so in parallel to the hugely damaging coal-fired assets that it is unlikely to ever want (to turn off in order to) to meet climate targets in years to come."

Treating the Symptom or the Cause

We see Global, Environmental problems everywhere...

Smoke belching for instance.

A lot of solutions are offered everywhere posted in Tri-medias... all offering to solve and cure the symptoms... never the cause.

For example: Fuel Savers that are added into your fuel... Turning Garbage into Fuel... Bio-Diesel alternative fuels... etc.

Whenever an idea to solve the cause comes out... it is normally over-looked, understated and left unnoticed.

GTO is an idea long overdue to cure the cause... when we hit the cause... we remove all the symptoms.

But when we focus in curing the symptoms... then we are merely masking the real cause of the problem.

Now for some reality check...

Todays world is somehow related to what happened in that fictional hollywood film...

Those who control the wealth of the world... are the very people controlling the climate.

The Greenhouse Gases they contribute in destroying the Ozone Layer - did alter many weather patterns... destroying environment and human lives to mass proportions.

But the OTG Group firmly believes we can grab the wheel...

Yes we can have CLIMATE CONTROL...

How thoughts can control the weather - Sequel 2

This is not a usual post for this blog site, but this blog is dedicated to the Green Technology Program where GTO plays a huge role initially.

And it is after all about saving the planet.

I needed to write this post as a follow up on the previous one.

If you have all been monitoring Typhoon Ramon... and have read the post previous to this one... you will probably have a big smile plastered on your face.

PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Atmospheric Services Authority)stated that this storm is so inconsistent with its' path and movements... they never expected this.

It simply avoided all the land areas and only concentrated on water bodies... If you can't explain this... then it will called a mystery or a miracle.

The OTG Group has been exercising weather control by thought power for the past years - secretly. But like the rest of the GTP items... we can't keep our secrets for ourselves for so long. Not when it comes to contributing goodness to humanity and the environment.

Doing thought control is not like the ones we see on TV.... sorry, there is no mumbo jumbo, voodoo, yoga magic here. But it takes purity of heart, intent and spirit in order to practice it.

We have heard of the old saying... mind over matter... well... it is just as it is.

The above image shows how Typhoon Ramon tried to avoid the land bodies of the island rich Philippine archipelago.

OK... now that we have shared a glimpse of how real OTG Guys work... let's go back to business.

Focus is important, typhoons come and go... but climate destruction will stay... unless we fast track Emissions Reduction ASAP!

Euro standards are targeting only 70% reduction by the year 2035... why so low a target when we can already meet 99% or more even as we speak?

I guess... OTG Guys need to focus their thoughts now in projecting a worldwide Green Technology Program happening anytime soon!

How your thoughts can control the weather

As an OTG Guy... we have the advantage of exploring many untraveled roads - much further than the norms.

We have found many valid works like that of Dr. Emoto (a Japanese Physicist) that thoughts can affect water very well... like in an instant.

Combined it with weather control experiments conducted by many Russian Scientists as well as other Scientists from Europe and the Americas...

And cross referencing it with personal experiences as well as those who donate eggs to the monastery of St. Claire in Quezon City...

We figured that... since Rain Clouds are mainly composed of 80% water... it is probably controllable with thought energy.

We have done small experiments in the past... and we would like to share this idea with the rest of the world.

If one would have a hightened sense of discernment... one may notice how synchronicity works in all aspects of life.

I just posted yesterday my insight about "GLOBAL FLOODING"... and a flash flood occur again last night in Davao City... and now... Tropical Depression Ramon has entered Philippine Territory, Signal #1 already hitting Mindanao and Visayas as we speak.

This is not the usual path of storms, and when this happens... it normally is a very strong storm.

We would like to invite the public into one of our little secrets.

We need pure hearted people to focus into one single thought.

To disperse and scatter the cloud formation of the typhoon vortex...

Imagine that the storms radials to spread and thin out... this will lessen the impact of a down pour and weaken the concentration of the vortex spin.

A WORD OF CAUTION about PTFE's or Teflon

The GTO and GTF treatmemt system/ approach is designed only for Ordinary and Synthetic Motor Oil mixes.

If you have put in any other additive in your engine oil prior to the GTO+GTF treatment, it is best to drain your oil first and replenish it with fresh motor oil before treatment. It is also adviseable to flush your system.

For those who have placed additives with TEFLON content... please do not use the GTF treatment anymore. Only use the GTO treatment.

Doing so may cause the Teflon layer to soften and cause clogging into your engine oil capillaries which may and can cause hot spots that can lead to accelerated wear on metal to metal surface.

However, GTO can still protect your engine, the only compromise is... it may become more noisy than before.

Should you have made this mistake before adding GTO into your engine oil... please consult with our OTG Tech Guys for help..We will see to it that it is attended into.

For the record: GTO and GTF is not a synthetic additive... it is a non-synthetic but organic and natural lubrication treatment solution.

Going back to additives... we don't know what they put into those commercially available additives and we surely don't want to know... you don't want to know neither. These are engineered liquids with proprietary attributes designed to protect their interest alone...

Teflon protection is only as good as getting your engine from one shop to another... it is merely a temporary cure. Once you engine if teflon protected, you may not use it as normally as you would and could... you will need to baby it.

GTO + GTF is intended to treat the normal oil alone, not the other additives.

It is also advised not to treat engines that has been overheated... Overheated engines will show problems sooner or later since the gaskets will become brittle and susceptible to cracking which can lead to compression loss and oil leaking.

GTF is a water based catalyst that works only with GTO... water will be present in your motor oil for a little while after the treatment, but it will eventually disappear after 50 to 100km, depending on engine usage. During it's treatment phase, the carbon deposits are being softened and purged out of the engine and therefore, flushing becomes unnecessary anymore.

Bear in mind: GTO makes your engine love water... thus the GTF is never intended to be used without GTO nor in the presence of PTFE.

The PTFE Mystery

Currently, the most common and popular oil additives on the market are those that contain PTFE powders suspended in a regular, over-the-counter type, 50-rated petroleum or synthetic engine oil. PTFE is the common abbreviation used for Polytetrafloeraethylene, more commonly known by the tradename "Teflon," which is a registered trademark of the DuPont Chemical Corporation. Among those oil additives we have identified as containing PTFE are: Slick 50, Liquid Ring, Lubrilon, Microlon, Matrix, Petrolon (same company as Slick 50), QMl, and T-Plus (K-Mart). There are probably many more names in use on many more products using PTFE. We have found that oil additive makers like to market their products under a multitude of "private brand" names.

While some of these products may contain other additives in addition to PTFE, all seem to rely on the PTFE as their primary active ingredient and all, without exception, do not list what other ingredients they may contain.

Though they have gained rather wide acceptance among the motoring public, oil additives containing PTFE have also garnered their share of critics among experts in the field of lubrication. By far the most damning testimonial against these products originally came from the DuPont Chemical Corporation, inventor of PTFE and holder of the patents and trademarks for Teflon. In a statement issued about ten years ago, DuPont's Fluoropolymers Division Product Specialist, J.F. Imbalzano said, "Teflon is not useful as an ingredient in oil additives or oils used for internal combustion engines."

At the time, DuPont threatened legal action against anyone who used the name "Teflon" on any oil product destined for use in an internal combustion engine, and refused to sell its PTFE powders to any one who intended to use them for such purposes.

The Philippines has among the largest and fastest growing markets for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the Asia-Pacific region. The Philippines Government Energy Plan 1999-2008 shows that LPG use in the country has been rising steadily at approximately 37% per year for the past 12 years. The Philippines currently consumes close to one million metric tons of LPG per year on average; in 2003 LPG consumption in the country hit a record-high of 1.150 million metric tons. As LPG consumption expands, implementing regulations and standards to facilitate safety and security becomes more important. Today, however, the Philippines cannot claim an existing law or regulatory framework to safely operate the country’s LPG industry. SHELL Sells LPG Business to Filipino Japanese Consortium

..Anglo-Dutch energy giant Shell's Philippine unit said on Wednesday it would sell its local liquefied petroleum gas business to a Japanese-Filipino consortium for an undisclosed price.

"The sale of Shell's share in the Philippines LPG business is consistent with Shell's strategy to concentrate its global downstream footprint into fewer, larger markets," it said in a statement.

Shell Gas Philippines is to be sold to a consortium called Isla Petroleum and Gas Corp., it said, adding that Shell's other downstream businesses would not be affected by the deal.

Shell spokesmen declined to comment on reports that valued the transaction at $131 million nor identify Isla's Japanese partner, which the reports named as Itochu Petroleum Co.

The date of the sale was also not disclosed.

Shell Gas is a leading player in the importation and distribution of LPG in the Philippines, where it is widely used for cooking.

Isla Petroleum representatives in the Philippines could not be reached for comment.

PONDERING CORNER

Based on the above readings... when one must reflect deeply, the following questions comes to mind:

If Shell is doing a good business... then why is it selling its LPG business here?

If there is a clear and present danger of a domino effect, then why is it not openly a discussed issue?

Does SHELL see way far ahead than the rest with regards to the future of LPG?

It is a known fact that SHELL invests in alternative energy like the Hydrogen Hiway in Norway, Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology with its test bed; the Shell Formula Zero events... aside from its Social Responsibility Mission statement to name a few... then how come is it promoting LPG in the first place?... and why the sudden selling while it is at its peak?

Some theories... It probably sees a downfall of the LPG business very soon. And selling it while it's at its peak can make the price handsome... as it is easier to sell to the the trend followers.

This Dutch Company is considered to be about 50 years advance compared with the rest of the world (generally speaking) when it comes to business and technologies. Selling it to a Filipino - Japanese Consortium is a very wise move... but I would not call it very socially responsible.

Nothing is really what it seems.

Are older vehicles fitted with LPG as environmentally friendly?

Based on the results of the Federal Governments own test programs which indicate that tail pipe C02 emissions produced by older cars (pre 1993) fitted with LPG are still some 14% lower than their petrol powered counterparts.

LPG for transport

Many Danish cars drove during the period 1960 - 1990 on LPG gas (Liquified Petroleum Gas) also known as the GPL, LP gas or auto gas.

LPG is a liquid that is a by product from the refinery processing oil. The reason for virtually no one is running on this fuel in Denmark today is that tax rules were changed in the 1980s. But there are still a few stations back offering LPG gas and in Norway there are approximately 25,000 cars that have LPG as a propellant.

Benefits of LPG cars are that ordinary cars relatively easily are rebuilt to run on LPG gas and there are conversion kits for ordinary gasoline cars.

LPG gas is not stored under high pressure, but only need an operating pressure of 10 bar which is very little compared the operating pressure of natural gas at 200 bar. The low pressure makes it easier to build tanks.

LPG vehicles have CO2 emissions levels like ordinary petrol cars and higher particulate emissions than natural gas, so there are no environmental benefit. Another problem is the explosion hazard, which is quite big.

Denmark has earlier had many buses running on LPG gas, but they are also moving away.

MUMBAI: Vehicles run by compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) in the metropolis are emitting particulates smaller than 2.5 micron in diameter which pose a health hazard, a BMC report has said. However, due to the use of cleaner fuels like unleaded petrol and low sulphur diesel, levels of so2 and lead have come down in Mumbai, the report added.

The environment status report has been prepared by the BMC's air quality monitoring and research laboratory. The smaller particulates, considered a serious health hazard, are generated in large quantities by vehicles which run on gaseous fuels like LPG and CNG, the report said. "The particulates smaller than 2.5 microns are easy to breathe in and dangerous substances can enter the body. If they are left unregulated, they will be major health hazards. This could also lead to lung cancer.''

As per the data available till March 2008, in Mumbai, there are around 44,721 metered and 290 tourist taxis, 540 cars, 290 buses, 95,813 auto-rickshaws and 986 goods carriers that operate on CNG. There are around 256 auto-rickshaws, 1,753 metered and 306 tourist taxis, 4,182 cars, 22 buses and 3,545 goods carriers that operate on LPG.

Death of drivers hound LPG-taxi proponents

Recent deaths of taxi drivers in Iloilo City opened anew discussions and debate on the safety of taxi units converted for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)-use here.

In a two-hour public forum over Bombo Radyo's Zona Libre held Friday, LPG-taxi proponents both from the government and private sector faced off with concerns raised primarily by taxi drivers themselves.

A random interview was made by Bombo Radyo that heard similar sentiments of the drivers on health issues. From complaints of persistent dry cough to dryness of throats, the drivers' concerns were matched by complaints of dizziness and sudden headaches from select commuters reached by the radio station.

Dr. Florentino Alerta II was among the panelists with a lengthy discussion presented on the perils of LPG. Dr. Alerta likewise pushed for the importance of regular medical check-ups of taxi drivers as part of the company policy.

Iloilo City has some 600 to 700 taxi units now LPG-run. GDR taxis, one of the biggest taxi groups plying throughout Iloilo has its units "all 100%" converted. No actual figure was disclosed by the owner Donna Ratilla though saying she would rather leave it at its percentage than give the specific units.

Ratilla maintained the safety of LPG in all of its taxis while stressing that such was in compliance of the government's thrust for cleaner air.

As safety precautions, the proponents added, all LPG-taxis are prohibited to park in enclosed waiting areas. And installers are duly checked too, the group continued with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) ensuring the supposed road-worthiness of the LPG-converted taxi units.

The News Today (TNT) in a report gathered at least six deaths of taxi drivers in a 3 month-period. No direct link was made to the LPG taxi units of the drivers however prevailing sentiments of drivers themselves persist.

Director Porferio Clavel of the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said it is about time that a public dialogue will be made on the subject. This, he said, should have the concerted effort of government agencies involved in the LPG-conversion project. Health issues must also be tackled, Director Clavel agreed if only to successfully push for the program and erase the misconceptions of the drivers and commuting public.

Photojournalist Rufino "Pinoy" Gonzales phoned-in from Texas, USA to share his own LPG-taxi episode. A non-smoker, Gonzales said he suffered from sudden nausea and dizziness in two occasions that he took a taxi later discovered to be LPG-run.

MANILA, Philippines -- While the phaseout of leaded gasoline has improved air quality in the country, more than 18 million people still live in cities with unhealthy levels of airborne particulate matter.

Of the urban cities, Metro Manila has the largest ``health burden? from air pollution.

Estimates showed there were nearly 4,968 premature deaths each year in Manila due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases from exposure to poor air quality, according to the Philippine Environment Monitor, a joint report of the World Bank and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) released Tuesday.

These accounted for 12 percent of all deaths in the metropolis, the highest in any urban area in the country, it said.

The latest report examined the role of environment in people's health in the Philippines.

Rahul Raturi, sector manager of the WB's Rural Development, Natural Resources and Environmental Sector, said that one-fifth of reported cases of disease were due to air pollution, water pollution, poor sanitation and hygiene.

``The cost of treatment and lost income from these environmental diseases is roughly estimated at P14 billion per year,? he said in his address at the launch.

Raturi said the poor were more exposed to environmental risks. Low-income groups had lower access to basic sanitation and safe water supply. They were also exposed to water and air pollution.

According to the report, several governmentinterventions over the past 10 years had improved air quality.

For instance, the closure of a number of coal-firedpower plants near Manila in 2001 led to a reduction in sulfur dioxide concentrations, while the phaseout of leaded gasoline led to a ten-fold reduction in ambient lead levels since 2001, it said.

But air pollution remained higher in urban centers than in rural areas, the Environment Monitor said.

Concentrations of particulate matter, often used as an indicator of air pollution, were estimated to be three times higher on average in ``urban roadsides? than in rural areas, it said.

Many cities in the country had air pollution levels above national standards, it added.

Particulate matter is the generic term used for a type of air pollution that consists of complex and varying mixtures of particles suspended in the air.

``With regard to the health impacts of air pollution, one very clear message stands out: Particulate matter emitted from motor vehicles is the largest health risk from air pollution,? Raturi said.

``Some 18 million people live in cities that exceed DENR standards. Metro Manila with its large population and high pollution levels, has the largest health burden from air pollution, with motor vehicles and utility vehicles being the greatest culprits,? he added.

Particulate emissions in Manila largely came from motor vehicles (84 percent), solid waste burning (10 percent), and industries (5.5 percent).

Seventy percent of car emissions came from more than 200,000 diesel-powered utility vehicles, like jeepneys, and 170,000 gasoline-powered motorcycles and tricycles.

``Prioritizing measures to further reduce these emissions under the Clean Air Act would result in important health

improvements,? Raturi said.

In terms of premature deaths due to pollution, Metro Manila was followed by Metro Cebu's 608, Davao City's 414, Zamboanga City's 240, Iloilo City's 204, Cabanatuan's 134, according to the report.

This 5 foot long Philippine King Cobra was chasing a field lizard at very high speed when it crossed the path of the GTO-treated Hyundai Tiburon on its way to Matina driving through Jack Ridge hill at cruising speed.

The Lizard was running like crazy as if it was almost flying across the road... and after a few seconds... this cobra came at lightning speed behind the lizard. The Lizard was indeed lucky that the GTO Tiburon was passing by just in time to save the day.

Ignorance is indeed bliss.... what you dont know... will hurt you eventually someday soon....

Folks of Davao are more laid back compared to Cebuanos and Manilenios.... they hold protest strikes here more quiet and peaceful... they have huge tolerance for corporate criminals here compared to their European counterparts.

This is perhaps why it is now the best spot for investment... specially for Villar and his like.

Camella Housing Developments has saturated Manila, Cavite and the rest of Luzon... it is now trying to do the same destructive patterns in Davao... the land of Promise.... and probably... the land of empty promise.

The Camella subdivisions built towards Calinan is mainly part to be blamed for the Flashflooding of the Matina Pangi areas..

Of course there are also other constructions and development companies riding the same band wagon of Villar... like Ayala, Sta. Lucia, etc. All promising better lives and livelihood for the Davaoenios... and an Airconditioned Mall for them to spend more!

If you really care about saving Davao.... then, we should oppose this systematic destruction of our environment.

We have started it already with our own cars....

But it is not enough to drive green.. we need to participate in Government decisions... help them make the right decisions... preserve our environment.
